The Twins' wide array of power sources on the record-setting day was fitting for the 2019 club. Eight different Twins reached the 20-homer mark -- Cruz , Kepler , Miguel Sano , Eddie Rosario , Garver , Cron , Jonathan Schoop and Polanco -- to make Minnesota the first team in MLB history to have eight 20-home-run hitters in a season. Expectations were high for the 2018 Yankees to challenge the team homer mark, especially after New York pulled off its blockbuster trade for Stanton in the offseason. But the Bronx Bombers' path to 267 took some unexpected turns.
Judge, coming off a historic 52-homer rookie season, missed more than a month and a half with a fractured wrist, and Sanchez also missed significant time and had his share of struggles. Still, both Judge and Sanchez played a role in the Yankees' at the time record-setting season, as did stellar rookie campaigns from Miguel Andujar and Torres and career years from Didi Gregorius and Aaron Hicks . The Yankees had 12 players reach double-digit homers, setting a Major League record in that category that would be topped again the following year.
Ken Griffey, Jr., and Alex Rodriguez, Mariners
In 1997, he led Major League Baseball in home runs, but led neither the American nor National League, as his season was split between the Oakland Athletics and St. Louis Cardinals. If that season were to be included, he would be the league leader for five seasons, four of which were in succession. The Boston Red Sox hit eight home runs against the Toronto Blue Jays on July 4, 1977. Seven of them were hit with nobody on base setting the Major League record for most home runs in a game with nobody on base. Heading into the 2022 season, an incredible 110 of the top 115 home run seasons – 217 or more round-trippers – have occurred since MLB expanded to 30 teams in 1993.
It took Trout less than a decade to become the Angels’ all-time leader in homers, adding another accolade to his ever-expanding list when he swatted his 300th career homer on Sept. 5, passing Tim Salmon for first place on the Halos' leaderboard. Already among the most accomplished players in history, Trout has finished first or second in the AL MVP Award race in seven of the past eight seasons, winning three times. The outfielder has added more power to his game in recent years, belting a career-high 45 home runs over 134 games in 2019 and challenging for the big league lead in ’20.
Most home runs by a team in one season
The Dodgers and Oakland Athletics have done this twice and the Chicago White Sox , Astros , Yankees , Padres and Cardinals once. The Yankees have not only won the most World Series, but they’ve also slugged the most home runs in baseball history – earning their Bronx Bombers nickname. In fact, when the AL schedule was 154 games, they posted both the top six seasons for home runs and 16 of the top 30 seasons in the junior circuit. Interestingly, a year later, in the first AL season of 162 games, their total shot up to a then-record 240 while Roger Maris hit his historic 61 home runs. Here are the teams atop MLB's all-time single-season home run list. At the other end, the teams that have the lowest records are the Pittsburg Pirates with 171 and the Kansas City Royals with a total of 193.
Bautista's 54-homer campaign represents one of the most dramatic breakouts in recent history. The journeyman third baseman-turned-outfielder had knocked 59 total dingers over six seasons before setting the Blue Jays' franchise record in 2010 and winning MLB's home run crown. Bautista's 41-homer increase from '09 to '10 set an MLB record for the largest single-season increase, but Toronto featured plenty of boom behind him with six other 20-plus-homer hitters. The pinstripes saw twin towers Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton combine to play just 120 games ... The Yankees battled the Twins for the single-season record right down to the last day of the season, with Torres leading the way and catcher Gary Sanchez rebounding from a tough 2018 season.
Hank Aaron and Eddie Mathews, Braves
Tex got plenty of support from Alfonso Soriano, who hit 30 of his 36 total homers out of the No. 5 spot, along with David Dellucci , Hank Blalock , Kevin Mench , Michael Young and Rod Barajas . In fact, this Rangers team tied a big league record with nine players knocking at least 15 roundtrippers. The Twins' march to the team home run record was a long time coming, and in the last inning of their last game of August, they surpassed the 2018 Bronx Bombers for the single-season record. Mitch Garver did the honors, crushing the record-setting long ball off the Tigers' Joe Jimenez. That one was just the capper of a six-homer day by Minnesota -- Garver homered twice, and Max Kepler, Jorge Polanco, C.J. Cron and Nelson Cruz also went deep.
With three MVP Awards, 12 All-Star selections, 10 Gold Gloves and a World Series title, Schmidt did it all during his career, which was spent entirely with the Phillies. The third baseman led the NL in homers eight times and hit 30-plus dingers in 13 seasons en route to 548 altogether. That included four against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on April 17, 1976, as Schmidt became the 10th player in big league history to go deep four times in a game. Stanton was a Marlin for only eight seasons and played fewer than 125 games in five of them, but the mammoth masher shattered the expansion franchise’s all-time home run record nonetheless. Stanton saved his best for last, slugging a single-season club record 59 homers and winning the NL MVP Award in 2017, his final year in Miami before being traded to the Yankees.
Career records
A six-time All-Star and five-time Silver Slugger Award winner, Braun has continued to pad his total since then, crossing the 300-mark in 2017. One of the top sluggers of the 1990s, Gonzalez crushed 40-plus homers five times from '92-98, leading the Majors twice ('92, '93) and winning two MVP Awards ('96, '98) in that span. Gonzalez had another 39 homers in 1999 before Texas traded him to the Tigers in a nine-player blockbuster.

On September 4, 1999, eight players from the Cincinnati Reds hit a home run in a game versus the Philadelphia Phillies setting a Major League record for most players with a home run during a game. The Cubs are one of many tied for second on this list with five homers in a playoff game. They hit that number in Game 1 of the 1984 NLCS against the San Diego Padres.
Matt Chapman and Matt Olson, the A's co-stars, fittingly tied for the team lead, with Olson averaging a homer for every 13 at-bats after he came off the injured list in early May. Marcus Semien exploded for a career-best 33 round-trippers after combining for 25 over the prior two seasons, and Stephen Piscotty and Josh Phegley made the most of their limited playing time.
